Recreation and Lifestyle in the Sierra Nevada

June Lake has been a recreation destination since the early 1900's.

Summer is fishing, hiking, boating, and green meadows filled with a profusion of wild flowers; or its lazing through long warm days, or playing golf in the community of Mammoth Lakes, just 20 miles to the south.

Fall is a special time of year in the June Lake area, as the plentiful aspen exchange a firm coat of green for a shedding coat of golden yellow and red. The hips of wild roses redden and grasses become tan and often coated with morning frost. Fishing is still great and the back country is still a treat for hikers. These quiet, warm days of Indian Summer are remembered all Winter.

Winter comes slower and usually with less intensity here than it does in Mammoth Lakes. The excellent sun exposure at the Highlands usually results in less permanent snow and warmer air than in nearby, down-canyon areas. The June Mountain Ski area owned and operated by Interwest (they also own and operate Mammoth Mountain) is a five-minute drive to the south. Downhill and nordic skiing, snow shoeing, snow boarding and snow mobiling fill the recreation calendar. The winter night sky can be filled with stars and a smear of the Milky-Way

Spring is probably the anxious time of year as the cold of winter is "getting old" and everyone is ready for the adventures of Summer. The June Lake area has always been a favorite for those wishing to start the trout season right. Early April finds streams and lakes well stocked.
